Glass Courses at the Glass Hub
Introduction to Venetian Cane Techniques
Masterclass with Scott Benefield
pouring bowls by Scott Benefield

This intensive three-day class is designed to provide students with the fundamentals of making functional vessels using cane. Class participants will be provided with a stock of cane in the beginning, which will be used to practice rolling up and forming various hollow vessels. In addition to exploring the design of functional wares, students will learn production techniques and teamwork so that multiple objects can be made with greater efficiency. Daily demonstrations will supplement supervised practice sessions so that students can progress as quickly as possible in an immersive, intensive studio environment. Time permitting, more complex cane patterns and processes will be demonstrated.

This class is only suitable for students with intermediate level skills who already have a basic grasp of traditional glassblowing processes and want to expand their technical vocabulary. If you are unsure please contact us.

IMPORTANT! Due to the cooling down processes involved with all glassmaking it is not possible for students to take work home on the day it is made. Work needs to cool slowly in our kilns and may be collected at a later time by arrangement or carefully packaged and posted to you for £20 (Our cost, no more).
Scott is internationally known as a glassblower and educator with a speciality in Italian cane techniques. He has conducted workshops on these techniques in the UK, ROI, Turkey, Japan and throughout the United States where he resided for many years. He was a director of the Glass Art Society in the U.S. and is currently on the GAS Advisory Board. Scott takes the exquisite techniques of mid-century Italian glass as a starting point for his work. He moves beyond historical replica by intentionally disrupting the rhythm and order of pattern to create unique, tension filled pieces that question our ideas about perfection and control. See
